Special Guest to speak about: "What Children Like to Read!"

As you know from June's newsletter Jeanne Mason will co-host our upcoming meeting this Saturday at NALIS.

A special guest will join her. Liz Lancaster will speak about "What Children Like to Read!"Based on her experience, this will offer tremendous guidance for local authors and illustrators.

Since Liz is from the US participants will be able to compare notes about differences and similarities.

Most published authors from the Caribbean manage to create stories that combine universal appeal with a specifically indigenous flavor.

Saturday 29th April,

2006 From 10 am to Noon.

At NALIS in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad in the basement Auditorium.

Bob will offer a presentation on his role as Design Manager and Art Director for Macmillan Caribbean which will be followed by a Q&A session.

Participants will also have some opportunity (as time permits) to show their portfolios and network with Mr. Swan.

Admission/ participation is FREE.

In the event of limited seating preference will be given to SCBWI members and to those who register before hand.

Mr. Swan is scouting for new Caribbean based talent for current and future projects.

Limited one on one appointments are available for booking Thursday 27th and Friday 28th April.

Illustrators, photographers and designers with work to show, may call or email to book in advance.

CALLING ALL CARIBBEAN/ TRINBAGONIAN ARTISTS

Get in the SCBWI loop!

Joanne is expecting a visit this year from Bob Swan, the art director of Macmillan Caribbean. He will be scouting for new talent : illustrators/ graphic artists/ photographers.

We are hoping to host a seminar with him so that he can talk to artists and writers about this aspect of books and publishing. Please register your interest by email and / or attending our monthly meetings. Share with those of similar interest.

2006 monthly meetings
Our monthly meetings in Trinidad will continue at NALIS in POS on the last Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to NOON. If there is enough interest, monthly meetings will be established in other parts of the country as well. Joanne Allong Haynes is exploring the options at Carnegie Free Library in San Fernando.

At the very least I would like to tour other community venues/ libraries with a view to interacting with writers and artists in other parts of the country. This year I also intend to establish a presence in Tobago and even some of the other islands/ countries in our Caribbean - South jurisdiction.
